Algorithmic Habitat

Computer installation for Peter Weibel’s "On Justifying the Hypothetical Nature of Art and its Non-Identity with the Object World" at the Tanja Grunert Gallery in Cologne, 1992

Electronic sensors are mounted under 26 circular metal plates inserted in the floor covering. As the visitor enters the space and passes the sensors, the walls, ceiling, and floor - seemingly disintegrate into virtual rectangular blocks of varying depth. These burst forth from the surfaces at differing speeds, creating a variety of topographic perceptions within the space.
