Video and sound installation, Spiral/Wacoal Art Center, Tokyo 1997
Nine video monitors installed in a black wall panel 1.5 metres tall and 25 metres in length. At irregular intervals of 15 and 25 minutes, video sequences of underground trains passing by appear across the monitor wall. The gallery visitors hear the train approaching from the distance, sometimes passing from left to right, sometimes from right to left, and for a brief moment see it apparently race through the gallery with a thunderous roar. An eight-channel audio system simulates the underground train's movement through the gallery space. The visual scale and sound volume correspond to what would be experienced if a train were actually barreling through the gallery.
